Noteworthy events from 2023 Summer Week 14

Outstanding outing(s):

  1. Paul S, Lito G, and Immer H each scored a perfect 80.
    • IRONY ALERT: In Immer’s case, it was his first 80 since Week 14 of the 2022 Autumn season.
  2. Braxton L shot a 77 – his highest score all season.
  3. Julian F, Mike M, Dennis S, and Mark H each totaled 73.

RAFFLE Status:

  1. Ed S broke dry on Table 03.
  2. Mona T was selected for the first time this season.  He made the 1-ball on the break.
    • the cue ball rested near the 1st northeast diamond.
    • the 2-ball was down table a third of the way between the south side and SW corner pockets.
    • Mona paused, shot, and sank the 2-ball like a bullet.
    • The cue-ball was set for a straight-on shot at the 3-ball which was open near the NW corner and the 4-ball was near it, but further east.
    • Mona sank the 3-ball and the cue-ball surprised everyone by following it into the esophagus of the NW corner pocket.
  3. The entire raffle pot rolls over to Week 15.

OTHER:

  1. Papi Chulos had one player missing which caused a minus 8 HCP impact for them.  The opponent Pocket Rattlers were therefore awarded a bonus 8 points as explained by the example described in rule 20.E.i.
  2. An unusual event was experienced by opponents Mike H and James W on Table 06.
    • An object ball was ejected from the table during a shot – not unusual per se.
    • However, after retrieving the ball, James missed tossing it into the NE corner pocket and it ricocheted off the pocket’s border and barreled into a group of balls on the table surface.
    • The League Operator was summoned and ruled that the strewn balls remain as they lay for the upcoming shot, with ball-in-hand awarded to the opponent of the shooter who jumped the original ball off the table.
  3. Another reminder is warranted that Rule 6B is an encouragement to record each score after each game. And although it isn’t specified to cross-check at that moment, it wouldn’t hurt to do so.  Drudging up detailed memories of a specific game at night’s end is far more difficult.
  4. One more week of matches remains for this season – except for Double Focus which has a BYE scheduled.  Is it mere irony that Double Focus is also in first place?

Noteworthy events from 2023 Summer Week 13

Outstanding outing(s):

  1. Julian F, Kevin C, Scott C, and Romy G each scored a perfect 80.
  2. Jerry R shot a 77 (Mark H was the spoiler).
  3. Esteban Q and Joe L each finished with 76 (Dave G and Adrian P were the respective spoilers).

RAFFLE Status:

  1. Speaking of Jerry R, he got selected first.  He made 3 balls on his Table 16 break: the 5-ball, 4-ball, and cue-ball in no particular order.
  2. Speaking of Romy G, he got selected second.  Romy made the 6-ball in the SW corner on his Table 11 break.
    • The 1-ball was on the east rail an inch and a half from the SE corner.
    • The 2-ball was in the direct path halfway the distance from the cue-ball which was down table.
    • the 4-ball was in the way of a kick shot off the northern rails.
    • Romy basically had zero chance at sinking the 1-ball legally. Nevertheless, at least 10% of the league players provided all kinds of advice.
    • After choosing, Romy kicked off the NW rail and fouled by hitting the 4-ball first.
  3. The entire raffle pot rolls over to week 14.

OTHER:

  1. The shooters8ball.com website was down and unavailable for several days during the week and throughout this league night due to a hosting company issue.  That’s the only time we’ve experienced that extreme.  It’s also why we maintain the standings and schedule and rosters in hardcopy on the bulletin board at the venue.  Good News: The website restored on the following morning.
  2. The Chicago Bears won (05Oct2023) their first game since 24Oct2022.

Noteworthy events from 2023 Summer Week 11

Outstanding outing(s):

  1. Bill F and Romy G each accomplished perfect 80s.
  2. Romy’s broLito (new word, but should be understandable) shot a 76.
  3. Mona T and Ed S each each tallied 73.

RAFFLE Status:

  1. Romy G was selected for the first time this season.  But there were no pictures taken of his Table 08 dry break.
  2. Sean B was selected for the first time this season.  He broke on Table 10 and sunk the 2-ball.
    • The 1-ball rested with an invitation to the NE corner.
    • Sean sent it a positive RSVP and set up for the SW corner pocket’s 3-9 combo.
    • But before shooting, he chose to cash out for 2/9ths of the available pot.  Then he shot and made the combo.
  3. The remaining raffle pot rolls over to Week 12.

OTHER:

  1. There Goes My 80 had a missing player. The HCP impact awarded a bonus 24 points to their opponent Pocket Rattlers.  This is applicable as demonstrated by the example described in rule 20.E.i.  Despite that adjustment, There Goes… outscored …Rattlers by 15 points.
  2. An unusual situation was brought to the attention of the League Operator.  One player made a stripe on the break.  By rule, it is still an open table.
    • On his 2nd shot, he called a solid, missed it, and sank another stripe and also the 8-ball instead.   By rule, it is still an open table, but the game is lost by the breaker because of sinking the 8-ball prematurely.
    • The League Operator, when asked, ruled that the breaker got zero points because he had not yet made a called ball and therefore had no rights to be stripes or solids.
    • The BCA rules were checked but they do not use the point scoring system that we do and therefore had no guidance to provide about scoring impact.
